Canadian IPP hires Milner EPC team to complete 204 gas-fired project

Canadian independent power producer Maxim Power Corp. has hired an engineering, procurement and construction contractor for its gas-fired project in Alberta.

A subsidiary of Maxim entered into the EPC deal with BPC Milner, a joint venture between affiliates of PCL Construction Group and Black & Veatch. BPC Milner will complete M2, a 204-MW simple cycle gas-fired plant, as part of a fixed price, turn-key contract valued at around $83 million, according to reports.

The estimated overall $143 million M2, located near Grand Cache, is expected to be completed by April 2020. Maxim has the option to increase capacity and turn M2 into a combined-cycle plant in the future.

Calgary-based Maxim currently owns and operates the 150-MW M1, otherwise known as the HR Milner Generating Station, in the same area. M1 is near the end of its federally regulated lifespan and will be replaced with M2.

The HR Milner M1 (pictured above) has been in operation since 1972 is a dual fuel steam turbine which can burn both natural gas and coal. Its power is sold to the Alberta Electric System Operator.
