The show’s highly-anticipated mega sessions are 90-minute, high-level industry panels and are open to all attendees.

Mega Session panels at POWERGEN International to focus on EPA proposed plant rules, gas turbine decarbonization

After months of planning, the power industry will reconvene at POWERGEN International in New Orleans later this month.

There will be much to discuss this year. The power sector continues to evolve at a frenetic pace to meet decarbonization goals and increasing demands for electrification. The industry will need to navigate new policies and leverage emerging technologies while maintaining resource adequacy and reliability.

The destination is 2050, but how do we get there?

POWERGEN’s technical conference program aims to help navigate the issues of today and offer a way forward. The jam-packed program features presentations highlighting case studies, new breakthroughs and leading insights relevant to the power and utility industries.

Anchoring the conference program are two mega sessions, which are 90-minute, high-level industry panels with thought leaders who dive deep into the most relevant topics related to the power sector. These mega sessions are open to all attendees.

Let’s take a closer look at these insightful sessions:

2023’s Release of New Regulations (Tuesday, January 23rd | 12:15 PM – 1:45 PM)

The year 2023 witnessed an unprecedented surge in new regulatory rules from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that directly impact the power industry. These new regulations include New Source Performance Standards, Good Neighbor Rule, Effluent Limitation Guidelines, Coal Combustion Residuals and others. This panel will discuss new, existing and proposed rules, as well as their applicability, status, potential impact to the industry and other considerations for compliance to these regulations.

Moderator: Patricia Scroggin-Wicker, Director, Decarbonization, Burns & McDonnell

Panelists:

  • Nick Hutson, Energy Strategies Group Lead, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • David Triplett, Sr. Mgr. Environmental Policy & Sustainability, Entergy
  • Jordan Flanagan, Policy and Programs Associate, Institute of Clear Air Companies (ICAC)

The Decarbonization Journey for Dispatchable Gas Turbines – 2032 and Beyond (Wednesday, January 24th | 8:15 AM – 9:45 AM)

*Buffet Breakfast served beginning at 7:30AM

With proposed ruling implications requiring hydrogen blending by as early as 2032, our journey towards decarbonization is faster and nearer than ever before. The U.S. and world markets need critical, dispatchable assets such as gas turbines to ensure these goals are met in a reliable, resilient, and affordable manner. Gas turbines have played a pivotal role in reducing CO2 and other emissions as many coal units have retired. To meet decarbonization goals, gas turbines need to continue to evolve.

This highly anticipated Mega Session will focus on the rapid development for low-carbon fuel capabilities, with a specific focus on the energy carriers of hydrogen and ammonia. Speakers on this moderated panel will represent prominent gas turbine OEMs and focus on cutting-edge research & development, blending demonstrations and technical capabilities for new and existing gas turbine-equipped power plants as part of the accelerating energy transition.

Moderator: Bobby Noble, Program Manager, Gas Turbine R&D, EPRI
